What is ‘no payment upfront’?
The 'no payment upfront' feature is our way of rewarding customers who have shown a strong history of paying on time. Eligible customers pay $0 upfront on eligible purchases under $500 (excluding gift cards, and starting 4th of March 2025 purchases at grocery or fuel merchants will also be excluded). Your first payment will be due 8–14 days after your purchase date, aligned to your preferred payment day.
How do I get access to ‘no payment upfront’?
When deciding who can use our ‘no payment upfront’ feature, we look at a few factors, including:
- How long you’ve been using Afterpay;
- Whether you’ve reached out to us to receive hardship relief in the past year;
- The amount of times in the last 6 months that your payment has declined at checkout; and
- Most importantly, your overall on-time payment behaviour and how regularly you use Afterpay.
When will you take my first payment?
When you make your first payment depends on whether you have access to our ‘no payment upfront’ feature.
- If you don’t have access: Your first payment of approximately 25% of your order will be taken at checkout, and you must have the funds available on your linked debit or credit card for your order to be approved.
- If you do have access and the purchase is eligible: You can delay your first payment of approximately 25% of your order by 8–14 days, aligned with your preferred payment day.
When is an upfront payment always required?
Even if you have access to the ‘no payment upfront’ feature, your first payment will still be taken when you checkout for:
- Gift card purchases
- Orders over $500
- Purchases from grocery or fuel merchants.
I no longer have access to the ‘no payment upfront’ feature, why?
This is most likely due to your payment history, which may include a payment failure at checkout. Or you may have lost access due to one or more of the factors mentioned above.
The good news? We regularly review access, and may make this feature available to you again in the future. To improve your chances, we recommend continuing to use Afterpay responsibly, including making your payments on time. We’ll reach out if your access is reactivated!
How do I turn on / off ‘no payment upfront’?
Toggling the feature on or off is easy in the Afterpay app:
- Tap 'My Afterpay’ in the bottom right of your screen
- Scroll down and to the 'Account settings' heading and tap 'Payment settings'.
- Tap the ‘No payment upfront’ heading
- Tap the toggle button to turn this feature on or off
Note: If you are newly eligible for ‘no payment upfront’, it’ll be turned on automatically in your app. You can turn it off any time by following the steps above.
If you cannot see the option to turn this feature off/on, this means you currently don’t have access to the no payment upfront feature.
