Eligible for the Afterpay Card and want to check which retailers accept Afterpay in-store? Go here.
If you've successfully set up the Afterpay Card, when you're ready to pay, use your Apple Pay or Google Pay wallet and select the Afterpay Card to tap and pay!
Being asked for a PIN?
The Afterpay Card doesn’t have a PIN or CVV number.
The store person has selected the payment method as ‘credit card’.
Ask the salesperson to retry the purchase and select the payment method as ‘debit card’.
How much can I spend?
If you’re an existing Afterpay shopper
Your outstanding payments may affect your ability to make another purchase.
The number of purchases you currently have 'open' with us could affect your ability to make another purchase.
Previous late payments—even those made before a late fee is charged—will reduce your spending limits on future purchases, both in store and online.
If you’re a new Afterpay shopper
We start new shoppers with a lower spending limit that typically increases over time with more purchases and good payment history. You can learn more here.
New customers may need to undergo an eligibility check if wanting to shop in-store using the Afterpay Card. See more information on eligibility requirements here.
My Afterpay Card is not working in-store
If your Afterpay Card is not being accepted in-store, work through these steps in order.
When the terminal asks you to select a payment type, always choose DEBIT (not CREDIT). This is the most common reason the Afterpay Card is declined in-store.
NFC troubleshooting checklist
-
Make sure NFC (tap-to-pay) is enabled on your phone.
- iPhone: Settings → Wallet & Apple Pay → make sure Afterpay Card is set as a payment option.
- Android: Settings → Connected devices (or NFC) → make sure NFC is turned on.
- Hold your phone within 1–2 inches of the terminal reader.
- Wait for the vibration or confirmation sound before pulling away.
- Make sure your phone is unlocked and your wallet app is active.
- Try holding your phone in a slightly different position. The NFC antenna location varies by phone model.
Remove and re-add the Afterpay Card to your wallet
If NFC is enabled but the card still does not work:
- Open your digital wallet (Apple Wallet or Google Wallet).
- Find the Afterpay Card and remove it.
- Open the Afterpay app.
- Go to the Card section.
- Tap Add to wallet (or Set up card).
- Follow the prompts to re-provision the card.
- Try your purchase again.
Use the barcode
If tap-to-pay is not working and the merchant supports it:
- Open the Afterpay app.
- Go to the Card section.
- Look for a barcode or QR code option.
- Show the barcode to the cashier to scan.
Note: Not all merchants support barcode payments. Ask the cashier if this is an option.
Terminal compatibility
The Afterpay Card works at merchants that accept:
- Contactless payments (NFC/tap-to-pay) through Apple Pay or Google Pay
- Visa or Mastercard (depending on your Afterpay Card type)
It may not work at:
- Terminals that only accept chip or swipe (no contactless)
- Self-checkout machines with limited NFC support
- Terminals that require a physical card insertion
If the merchant's terminal does not support contactless payments, you will need to use a different payment method for that transaction.
