Your approved spending limit with Afterpay will depend on our assessment of your ability to make repayments on your short instalment plan. This will largely be determined by your repayment history.
For those who have only recently joined Afterpay, spending limits will generally be smaller. However, the longer you are with us, spending responsibly and making repayments on time, your spending limits may increase.
As we learn more about each other, our system incentivises responsible spending and we can work together to help you plan, buy and pay for more of the things you need.
Before trying to make a purchase with Afterpay, it’s important that you think about the following:
- Are there sufficient funds in your account? Generally, we want to see at least the first instalment amount the purchase price.
- How long have you been using Afterpay? We are more likely to limit you to small purchases in your first 6 weeks.
- How much do you have to repay on this purchase and any previous outstanding purchases? The smaller the amount to repay, the more likely your purchase will be approved.
We are committed to making sure our community supports responsible spending. To help we have developed special proprietary technology to assess individual purchase applications. So, while you may not know exactly how much you can spend with Afterpay at any one time, this system is vital to help you stay in control of your money and avoid missed payments wherever possible.
Good to know:
We recognise many customers create a barcode immediately before shopping online. If /when you do this you may find that your online order is declined
Each time you create a barcode you are putting a 'hold' on those funds for use in-store for a period of 10 minutes. So if you try to shop online straightaway the funds are not available for use. If you have created a barcode, you will need to wait 10 minutes before shopping online with Afterpay.
