First, the merchant has to process the refund in their system. The refund will then drop through to reflect on your Afterpay account, and if you're owed a refund back to your card, it will be returned to the card that was used to make the payments.
Once processed, the money can take up to 10 business days to be returned to your card/s, depending on your financial institution.
Returns are always subject to the merchants refund policy. This information can normally be found on their website or by contacting the merchant directly.
How to check your refund status in the app
- Open Afterpay and go to Orders.
- Select the order you returned.
- Look for the refund status:
- Refund pending: The merchant has initiated the refund but it has not been processed yet.
- Refund processed: Afterpay has received the refund and adjusted your payments.
- Refund complete: The money has been returned to your bank account or card.
Which payments are adjusted first
When a refund is processed, Afterpay adjusts your payments in this order:
- Future scheduled payments are reduced or canceled first.
- If all future payments are already covered, the refund is returned to your original payment method.
- If you have already paid the full amount, the entire refund goes back to your bank account or card.
"Refund processed" vs. "refund received"
- Refund processed means Afterpay has adjusted your account. You can see this in the app under your order details. Your payment schedule is updated.
- Refund received means the money has arrived in your bank account. This happens 3–5 business days after Afterpay processes the refund.
If your order shows "refund processed" but you have not received money in your bank account, wait 3–5 business days. If it still has not appeared after that, contact your bank.
