As part of our checks, we sometimes conduct a pre-authorisation on your specified card to ensure that nobody is fraudulently using your details or card, as well as to help assure that you'll be able to repay your purchase to Afterpay.
The amount will vary, but will never be greater than your first instalment (plus 1c) due for the order. This pre-authorisation is immediately voided or reversed by Afterpay, which means that the funds should not be withheld from your account. This process is aligned with typical industry practices.
In some instances, we have observed that some banks do not always process both parts of the transaction (i.e. "the pre-auth" and "the void") simultaneously as per our instructions meaning that a pending transaction may appear on your account. This should not be the case, but it sometimes happens and is beyond Afterpay's control.
Importantly, this is not a charge, and Afterpay does not receive any funds associated with the pre-authorisation and void transaction.
In order to help speed up the process to release these funds, we can send a "pre-authorisation void request" to your bank. If you would like us to do this for you, please let us know.
For more information on bank pre-authorisations, please refer to our terms on the Afterpay website here https://www.afterpay.com.au/terms/
We hope this explanation addresses your concern and as always, thanks for choosing Afterpay.
